Customer rating is 5 of 5  DeWalt DW734 Planer   2010-05-21
By Lazer (USA)
This was a good purchase. The machine came setup and ready to run out of the box. The only warning to other buyers is MAKE SURE YOU BLOW OUT ANY METAL machining chips/shaving before running your first wood through because they will get embedded into the roller side of the wood and mess up your cutters right away; big mistake on my part.
I think DeWalt should have this TO DO on the front page or maybe they just want to sell more blades?
Delivery & pricing from Amazon was great.

Customer rating is 5 of 5  A GREAT Planer, Outstanding Value   2010-04-30
By Randall Gnant (Bella Vista, AR)
I've had this planer for almost a year and decided to put it thoroughly thru its paces before writing a review.

I've put hundreds and hundreds of feet of maple, ash, walnut, cherry and oak thru the 734 and the planer has performed flawlessly. It will take 1/16" if an inch without any problem at all -- I generally don't need to take off much more. If I do, several small passes is a breeze.

I am bewildered by those folks who seem to get snipe. If the piece enters the planer flush with the entrance shelf, there is no noticeable snipe. If you put the piece into the planer at an angle, you should expect snipe.

I estimate the finish coming out of the planer to be about the same as you would get with 120 grit sandpaper. Unless you are building fine furniture, you can probably get away with little or no sanding.

The optional stand is a tad expensive, but it provides a solid base for the planer and provides great portability.

The dust collection system, in my opinion, really only works if you have an active dust collection system pulling the dust into the system. That is, just providing a trash can at the end of a hose doesn't work very well because there is not enough force to push the shaving through the hose. I just generally let the shavings blow out and sweep up afterwards.

As to the noise some people mentioned -- this is a planer, not a coffee maker. There is going to be some noise.

After about 8 months of fairly heavy use, I finally had to change the blades. Actually, I only had to turn the blades around because they are double sided. Took all of about 5 minutes.

This planer is an extraordinary value. Quite frankly, I can't imagine a better planer for the money.
Customer rating is 5 of 5  great machine   2010-04-01

Spent a long time deciding on this, my first planer. It was easy to set up, and the instructions were fairly simple as to how to start planing wood. I ran several rough sawn oak boards through, and the results were excellent. I did see a slight snipe, on some of the very short boards, but it was easily taken care of with a little sandpaper.
Customer rating is 3 of 5  Not bad, but does have limits   2010-03-05
By Norm Venturino (Twain Harte, CA)
I am a huge Dewalt fan and consumer. My workshop looks like one big splash of yellow. I have been in the building trade since 1974 and a custom spec home builder since 1987. Recently, I expanded my range of finish work and have immersed myself in custom mill work, creating my own trim, door casings, jams, doors and cabinets. As such, I have been using this planer daily for the last 2 months, primarily on pine and oak rough stock. My first impression is....why did I wait 36 years to buy a bench top planer? My next question is..why did I go cheap and buy a bench top planer?

This is an adequate "hobby" level planer. It does a decent job on pine, but only fair on oak. While it has a max capacity of 1/8 inch stock removal in a single pass, don't even think of trying that with any of the hardwoods. In fact, when I am planning red oak, I limit my passes to 1/16th max, and prefer to stay in the 1/32 range to avoid snipe and overheating. The biggest achilles heel of this unit is the dust/chips collection. In fact, I have become so disgusted with the ineffectual plastic exhaust attachment, that I now run the planer without it. Yes, it makes a mess, but the alternative is jammed feed rollers.

In all fairness to Dewalt, I don't believe this unit was designed to handle the repetitive daily cycling of red oak rough that I have been running through it. As I said, I think it is more suited to a "hobby" woodworker than a professional craftsman.
Customer rating is 4 of 5  A good machine and how to make keep it tip-top   2010-02-04
By Joseph W. Scharl (Portsmouth, VA)
I bought this planer a few months ago to plane rough stock from the lumberyard and to utilize it with various woodworking products. It is a great planer, and was almost ready straight out of the box. After removing the packaging material, attaching the crank handle, and adjusting the beds, I was good to go.

I chose it over the competitor's models for a few reasons:

1. Overall, it had better reviews than the other manufacturer's models.
2. When I looked at it it person, it certainly was beefier and would likely hold up better.
3. Three cutter heads vs. two creates much smoother cuts.
4. I normally like DeWalt tools because they are designed a little more rugged.
5. I liked the dust hood I could attach directly to my shop vac.

After I bought the machine, I was pleasantly surprised to see an allen wrench and crescent wrench included in the package. not only were they included with the package, each had a little place to call their home on the machine, a snap-in spot for safe-keeping. These tools are the appropriate size for making your adjustments on the machine.

I initially had no problems, but after a while the material stopped going through the feeder on its own. I emailed Dewalt, whose customer service department didn't respond in a very punctual manner. However, then did let me know to clean the rollers and wax the bed. I also did some research waiting for DeWalt to contact me back and found a plethora of information on various sites. That being said, I learned a few things about thickness planers I would like to share.

Please understand that thickness planers are great tools, but also require much more periodic maintenance than the average power tool. No matter which planer you purchase, many work on the same principles.

1. Planers are more intensive to clean than other power tools. Because of the amount of waste they produce, they can quickly get bogged down with sawdust. Spray compressed air everywhere, especially on the bed and up in the cutter heads. ALWAYS make sure the machine is UNPLUGGED before cleaning.

2. After blowing out all the sawdust, clean the cutter heads with rubbing alcohol.

3. Use a natural paste wax to wax the entire bed of this machine. This will keep the material flowing smoothly through the bed. Never push stock if it doesn't move on its own, turn the machine off and remove it.

There are two reasons I gave this machine four stars instead of five. Customer service at Dewalt did not perform up to the standards I expect for good service. If you tell me I will get an email within 24 hours or 48 hours, I expect to get your answer. I got my answer over a week later. Also, it may just be my model, but it has ben impossible to set the beds level. The machine does cause a slight snipe (indention near the front/end), but it can be minimized be taking care to keep the stock level when first feeding it in and when it end is coming out of the machine.
