Customer rating is 5 of 5  .....they got the name right!   2010-07-24
By ralstonite
I think this really is an epic knife!! Great Gerber quality. I've owned many different brands over the years & have never been dissappointed with Gerber.....like their company mantra says: legendary blades. The fit & finish are top-notch & even the hard sheath is a clever but practical design. For a fixed blade knife it is reasonably small & concealable, but has excellent ergonomics and really fits the hand well. I suspect this will be one knife which i will want to keep for a long time.....good product!
Customer rating is 4 of 5  If you own the Gerber Profile...   2010-07-01
By JetJagger (Atlanta, GA)
There are a few complaints about the Epic's sheath clip because awkward to mount, plus a fear of it falling off. If you have a Gerber Profile ($21), then simply use that sheet. I think the sheath from the Gerber Big Rock would work, too, but it would be long. The Epic and Profile are similar in blade girth though the profile is 4" (cutting edge). Because of this, you can interchange knives in the Profile sheath.

Hope this helps.

Customer rating is 4 of 5  The perfect camping/rafting knife   2010-06-28
By Mathew J. Wieczorek (Omaha, NE USA)
What a fantastic knife. I took this knife on an annual camping/rafting trip and it never let me down. A actually received more compliments on this knife than anything I've ever owned (which lets you know the kind of goons i hang around with). I took it down river with it clipped to my waste. Upon hitting multiple rapids and falling overboard multiple times, i never worried i would lose it. Very sharp. Very nice case as-well, firm clip, snaps in place, great knife. The bottle open on the handle helps too ;-)
Customer rating is 5 of 5  Gerber delivers on this camp knife   2010-06-24
By Josh (NW USA)
This knife was purchased for me as a gift and I haven't been able to take my hands off it. This knife is a modified sheep's foot blade that is sturdy, durable and seemed capable of handling any cutting task I could come up with. It was sharp out of the box but a couple passes on the stone made it wickedely so. Notably, Gerber asserts that you can also do some prying with this knife; I tested that almost immediately and was satisfied with the results. I'm confident that I could even baton this knife through some firewood, maybe even cross grain, though I haven't been able to test that yet. Also, the bottle opener works effortlessly, unlike some. Now, there are a couple of cons. First, the handle of the knife feels like hard plastic and is a little uncomfortable in the hand. Also the pocket clip feels less than secure and I would worry that it could slip out if it snagged on something.
Customer rating is 4 of 5  Great knife but difficult to mount.   2010-03-28
By R. Gonzalez
I don't have any real complaints about the knife itself. The grip fits well in the hand, the knife is sharp, and it has good jimping.
BUT
This knife is difficult to mount due to the way the clip is built into the sheath. I am an average sized person, not too fat nor too thin, and problems mounting the knife fall into two basic categories:

1. The ergonomics of the knife are awkward and it is difficult to to draw the blade with the same sided hand.
2. Risk of the knife and sheath falling off and getting lost.

[For more notes, look at in the "user pictures" section.]

Mounting the knife on a backpack is not an option, for it would be a matter of time before the knife and sheath would wiggle loose and get lost. I have decided to keep the Gerber Epic in one of the outside backpack pockets where if I had to; I could reach in, use my thumb to pop off the sheath and draw the blade. Of course this would not be practical in a self-defense scenario or situation where it is crucial to draw the blade quickly. The rating is 4 out of 5 because the knife itself is very good. It is thhe awkward sheath negates the speed and one handed draw that is associated with fixed blade knifes.
