It alerted us when our furnace heat exchanger cracked 2010-08-22 |
| By nerdfu |
| We have this one and a First Alert plug-in model. This unit woke us up one night with a readout of 55 ppm. The First Alert did not. The next morning, we had someone come out to look at our furnace, and it turned out there was a crack in the heat exchanger. The First Alert alarm never went off despite its closer proximity to the furnace. I bought this one right before our baby was born, and I'm really glad that I did. |
It works... but there are some issues 2010-07-13 |
| By G. Kline (Hoboken, NJ) |
The overall design of this detector is pretty good. The battery compartment is very accessible (helpful for wall mounted units) and the test/peak buttons are easy to operate. Plus, there is a built-in stand, if you prefer not to wall mount it (although a wall mounting is certainly best).
There is one flaw that creates some confusion, though. When you press the "test/reset" button, the unit will automatically go into a test cycle. Some numbers may display, but these are not CO readings, only part of the internal test process. One might misinterpret this as a previous peak reading. You won't know this unless you read the manual.
The peak display is easily viewed and is accompanied by a back light. This is useful.
The display won't show 30 PPM or less readings, but it will detect 11 PPM or above. Supposedly pressing the peak level button will show what was last detected. What these makers should provide is a slightly better LCD display that also shows the date/time of the CO level detection. This information could be helpful in pinpointing the cause.
These units are designed to be disposable. After 7 years, you're supposed to junk it and buy a new one. Why? According to UL, "UL 2034, the independent standard applicable to CO alarms, requires CO alarms to have an end of life warning. This requirement went into effect in March 2007, meaning any CO alarm manufactured after April 2007 with a UL listing must have this feature. Most states that require CO alarms in residential dwellings mandate that the alarm meet the UL 2034 standard."
Apparently internal components have a risk of going out of tolerance over time. And since these units are so inexpensive, there is no means of calibrating them (or the cost of calibration would exceed the replacement cost). I can appreciate this, except that Kidde makes no provision or recommendation for disposal. I guess you just let this thing go in the trash to become part of land fill?
My particular unit was manufactured in March 2005, but did not get put into use until March 2008. After two years of use, there is a problem with the LCD display. Almost half of the segments fail to show (curiously, the ones for "0" still work). When you replace the battery, Kidde did put in a smart function that will momentarily show 888, which proves whether the segments are functioning. I contacted Kidde and they informed me the alarm will still function, but that I just won't know what the actual CO level is. Nice. No offer to replace it. I am just outside the 5 year warranty, even though it has only been in use for 2 years.
I am a little hesitant to try another Kidde alarm model... but they do seem to be the most popular and recommended--there aren't many alternatives on the market. If I get another one and it suffers the same display problem, I will look hard for a model from another brand. |

| By Alex Autrey (LENEXA, KANSAS, US) |
| This carbon monixide alarm seems to work very well. I havn't had any issues with it and it was exstremely easy to get working and installed. It absolutly allows me to sleep easier with the knowledge that me and my wife will not be victimized by that oderous gas. |
Confirm alarm with digital readout. 2010-07-08 |
| By John L. (Lenox, MA United States) |
| I'm replacing a similar 4 year old Kidde alarm without digital display that had started to generate repeated false alarms. CO alarm devices apparently have a fairly limited life. The digital display should help to confirm any future audible alarms. Batteries were included. Mounting holes matched the old unit. Very satisfied with the price. |
Works Well & Easy to Install 2010-06-28 |
| By J. A MONTALBANO (Bartlett, IL USA) |
The unit appears to work well, though I can't confirm the accuracy.
Coming with batteries, screws and a template: it was very easy to install. |
