Very powerful machine 2010-03-14 |
| By L.B. (Northern VA) |
| This is a pretty powerful item, cause it throws the snow about 30 ft. and it's hard to control. It is a Godsend compared to shoveling snow and is great for not hurting your back. The bad part is it is electric and the cord constantly comes loose. |
Decent shovel for the typical Mid-Atlantic snowstorm levels 2010-03-10 |
| By Bugman1964 (Leesburg, VA) |
I live in the DC area and had to use this item, just after purchase, to clear the results of the last two monster snowstorms we got this year (2010). With that much snow (in the 2 to 3 foot range, plus even bigger drifts and snow-plow created piles in front of the cars), don't expect this snow shovel to clear everything without a large amount of effort. Also, with snow at that level, you can expect to have to use a combination of a regular old shovel and the Toro shovel.
That said, this shovel works quite well if you persist at it, and is quite adequate by itself if the snow level is about 8 inches or less. As other reviewers have said, you have to be careful in which direction - and which angle - you point the thing, otherwise you will get a cloud of fine snow blowing back onto you. You should also make sure to get an electric cord that is rated for the amperage that this shovel requires, to be on the safe side.
Overall, this is a good buy if you have the typical townhouse unit space to clear (I have an end-unit TH with parking spaces for 2 cars - no garage). It won't work as effortlessly as a larger gas-powered snow blower, but then again, you won't have maintenance issues or have to shell out a lot of money for this handy little unit either. |
Toro Power shovel 2010-03-07 |
| By Frances F. Lea (Virginia) |
| I was disappointed. The only way this seems to work is on a very flat surface when there is only a little fresh snow. I could have just as easily used a shovel with less lifting. |
Amazing For Its Size 2010-02-17 |
| By Owlyn (Bucks County, PA) |
Hard to believe this little shovel can move so much snow. When there is less than 6 or 8 ", you just push through. When the snow is deep, you make several passes. In deep snow, I found that making one stripe down to the pavement down one side of the driveway, and then going back and taking bites of less width worked well. This way, you don't have to lift the shovel as much. So, for a 12" snow, it worked like this:
Lift the shovel, take off the first 6" deep x 12" wide for as far as I could reach. Then take the next 6" x 12". Now it's down to the pavement. Clear one whole length of the driveway like this. Then, go back to the top of the driveway, and instead of taking another 6 x 12 bite, take a 6 x 6 or 6 x 4 bite. This allows you to keep moving down the driveway without having to lift the shovel. The 4 or 6 " wide snow falls into the path of the shovel. It takes more passes this way, but there is very little lifting of the shovel, and it goes very quickly. Of course, you are better off going out during the storm and clearing 4 - 6" deep at a time, but if you can't the above method worked very well. It also is faster if you have a helper to work the cord for you as you clear.
As others have mentioned, you really need to consider the wind direction as you clear the snow, as the shovel only blows the snow forward.
One note- be sure to get a proper exetnsion cord. Get one that is rated for cold weather, and is the proper guauge (the instructions tell you what to get). |
It did the job. 2010-02-16 |
| By EasyReader (northern virginia) |
| The Toro power shovel arrived just in time for the first of two heavy snows in northern Virginia. Because we live in a townhouse and because we seldom have much snow accumulation (and because we are rather elderly), we wanted a small, lightweight, electric snow thrower for occasional use and easy storage. My husband found this shovel invaluable in clearing 2-3 inches (depth of snow) at a time from our 20-foot front walk. Were he shoveling manually, the same job that took a few minutes would have taken hours and would have put hearts and backs at risk. If the snow is deeper than about 3 inches, you have to take it off in layers -- so it's best, if possible, to keep up as it falls. I highly recommend this product for light or occasional snow removal. |
